Flowers have the power to soothe us. Their gentle, quiet presence adds beauty to our space and our hearts. Listen. Look. They ask nothing of you. To exist is enough.

Every time I walk past a flower stand I am compelled to stop. Stop, look, inhale, exhale. The same thing happens every time. I feel fuller, more peaceful. Flowers are one of those things we have no control over. We can plant them. We can water them. But they ask little else. What a gift to we mortals: such beauty.

This young man is serious about his guitar. I mean REALLY serious. When the music started, guitar in hand, he entered another magical world. He didn’t even know the camera existed. How glorious to love something as he does.

Blonde curls and big blue eyes! Focus on the face without the introduction of color. Black & White or color? Which do you like?
It’s always interesting to see how this choice can change the mood of an image. Sometimes the subject lends itself clearly to one process over the other. Here, I think they both work. Click on one of the images to see them larger.
What is summer about? And childhood. Simple things make the most beautiful moments. Here, an ephemeral moment of innocent childhood joy.
I call this portrait the “what’s up” look. This little guy smiles and is filled with energy most of the time. Late in the day, waiting for dinner, I caught an unexpectedly quiet moment. I just love his freckles, his red hair and his elf-like look. In fact, maybe he was one in a different life :)
Morning peaceful…
White tulips seen by my window.
A beautiful mother-to-be. It is rare that a woman who is not a model is so comfortable in front of a camera. She was. And hopefully you can see how peaceful she was in these last weeks before her baby was born.
Last week I did my first maternity photo shoot with a most beautiful woman. Her calmness, her poise and her comfort in front of the camera was very unusual. She has a peace about her that perhaps only pregnancy can bring. Thank you “A”so much for sharing this precious time in your life.

No, I didn’t create this. I wish I had thought of it though. Alone time is precious to me. It’s the time where I re-energize and have the freedom to create. This video, the words, the images, were created by Andrea Dorfman and express the gift of being alone in her inimitable creative fashion. How To Be Alone (by andyradorfman)
By February the winter days get to me. I start looking for more sun, flowers, warmth and gentle breezes. Not the cold winds off the Hudson River. The wedding in San Luis Obispo this past spring had all that and romance, romance, romance. Look at the afternoon light and the lavender beyond. It’s something to hold on to until spring.
Look at a few more of these images on my Love and Marriage page. I promise to add more to that page for you to enjoy.
And remember, call me if you have a wedding you would like me to capture for you :)
Longing. That’s the word which comes to mind when short winter days start to make me feel like hibernating. I long for spring, sunshine and the harmony of grass, flowers and sky. So here is a gift for us all: the beauty of flowers. I love to find them in a garden, hidden in a forest, boasting on a dinner table, or serenely resting on a windowsill.

Children - little miracles.
Take a look at the portraits I took of my very precious cousins. They are much too far away. You can see from the photos that they have very beautiful souls. And, wonderful parents.
I would love to photograph the precious moments of your family, together or individually. I’ll even photograph your beloved pet :) Children grow so quickly and the magic childhood moments are ephemeral. We’ll meet for a relaxed, fun session in a place of your choice. Or I can help you with a location. Let me help you capture your family’s treasured moments.
Here is a picture from a photo session I had with Melissa & Thomas this past fall. They were married during the summer and had formals done. But, they wanted some personal, informal photographs at Fort Tryon Park which overlooks the Hudson River. This is their special spot where they went on their first date and where they now like to take a romantic walk or relax and read on their favorite bench. The afternoon we were there, leaves in shades of red and orange still hid the view of the George Washington bridge. Paths scattered with yellow leaves seemed paved in gold. The Shakespeare Garden still had flourishes of lush purples and deep greens.
They laughed. They kissed. They sipped wine. It was my pleasure to be with the happy and ever-so-in-love newly weds. Thank you Melissa & Thomas for sharing your joy.
You can see a few more photos from their afternoon on the “Portrait Sneak Peaks” page.

I love this pensive moment. It is one of my favorite ways to capture a portrait, where the soul of the subject is revealed.

The rain is gone and it is a sunny day with a blue winter sky and gray clouds. I was in the mood for orchids. . . and some leaves.
